DSIP - DSIP

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool for advancing the fields of weather and climate science. The application of AI techniques, such as deep learning and neural networks, has opened new avenues for improving forecasting accuracy, understanding atmospheric dynamics, and addressing complex climate-related challenges. The “Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Autumn School” aims to equip participants with both fundamental and specialized skills in leveraging AI for meteorological and climatological applications.

Given the growing interest and success in AI-driven approaches to environmental science, we are excited to announce the upcoming “Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Autumn School”, scheduled from October 28 to 31, 2024, at the Bruno Kessler Foundation - ECT* headquarters. This intensive four-day program will offer a blend of face-to-face lectures and hands-on application labs designed to foster a deep understanding of AI methodologies in the context of weather and climate science.

The “Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Autumn School” will offer a class of 25 students face-to-face lectures and application labs to acquire basic and advanced skills in using artificial intelligence methods in weather and climate science.

International Speakers

Profile of Michael Langguth, PhD, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute for Advanced Simulation
Michael Langguth, PhD, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute for Advanced Simulation

Michael Langguth has a background in atmospheric physics and numerical modeling. In recent years, he has focused on the application of deep learning techniques (e.g., GANs, ConvLSTM) in meteorology, particularly for tasks such as nowcasting and downscaling. Currently, he is actively working on the design and development of AtmoRep, a state-of-the-art foundation model focused on modeling atmospheric dynamics using large-scale models.

Profile of Jussi Leinonen PhD, Nvidia
Jussi Leinonen PhD, Nvidia

Jussi Leinonen has a background in atmospheric physics and data science. In recent years, he has worked on the development and application of innovative neural network methods in the field of meteorology and climatology. He developed some of the first generative artificial intelligence models for atmospheric science problems, including a generative downscaling model in 2020. He joined NVIDIA in October 2023 to work as a solution architect in the Earth-2 project.
